Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is a multi-system, multi-symptom illness due to exposure to biotoxins. It has also been called Mold Illness, Mold Toxicity, Biotoxin Illness and Sick Building Syndrome. These biotoxin exposures are often the result of water-damaged buildings (WDB). WDB exposure may include exposures to toxic mold, mycobacteria, actinomycetes, exotoxins and endotoxins.
Additional biotoxins that may trigger CIRS symptoms include certain algae, certain spider and snake bites, tick borne illnesses, and dinoflagellates.

Water-Damaged Buildings are incredibly common. Studies performed in the United States estimate that 50-70% of buildings (residential and commercial) have water damage or toxic mold growth.
Anyone can experience symptoms related to Water-Damaged Building exposure. However, current research suggests that there is a genetic susceptibility to Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome. This susceptibility influences the immune system’s function and its ability to recognize and respond to certain biotoxins. It is estimated that around 25% of the population carries this gene variation (HLA-DR). Those with the HLA-DR gene may have difficulty recovering from biotoxin exposures.
When toxic mold along with other biotoxins are present indoors, the concentration levels affect indoor air quality and can become a health hazard. Addressing water intrusive events (such as leaks and high humidity) quickly also help to avoid structural issues to your home.
If you are experiencing the symptoms of CIRS, suspect you have hidden mold, or have a musty smell in your home, Pearl can help detect hidden mold in your home. We serve the state of Arkansas and are available to serve surrounding states
