Finding Mold in Arkansas Homes

May 29, 2025 by Janet Blade |

Know Where Mold Hides So You Can Keep Your Home Safe

Mold is sneaky. In Arkansas, where humidity levels run high and storms are frequent, mold finds plenty of places to thrive in our homes. The problem? Mold often grows in places you can’t see.

At K9 Mold Inspections LLC, we use a trained detection dog to find mold hidden inside walls, under floors, and in other hard-to-reach areas. If you’re wondering where mold might be hiding in your home, here are the most common locations we find mold in Arkansas homes.

1. Crawl Spaces

Crawl spaces are mold magnets. They are dark and often damp — especially if your home has poor drainage, your gutters overflow, or your crawl space is vented. Many Arkansas homes are built on crawl space foundations, making this one of the top places for hidden mold.

Tip: An encapsulated crawl space with a dehumidifier, adequate drainage, and a properly installed sump pump will help to maintain humidity, protect the structural integrity of your home, and protect your indoor air quality.

2. Laundry Rooms

Washing machines and utility sinks make laundry rooms another common mold zone. If the room isn’t ventilated well, moisture builds up — and mold can follow.

Tip: Check behind appliances and around hoses for leaks or condensation.

3. Bathrooms

Between steamy showers, poor ventilation, and plumbing leaks, bathrooms are prime spots for mold growth. Mold often hides behind tile, inside vanities, and under flooring.

Tip: Run the exhaust fan during and after showers, and keep an eye out for bubbling paint or warped surfaces — signs of moisture behind walls. Before running the exhaust fan, confirm that it vents to your home’s exterior. Venting condensation into the attic or into the space between two stories can lead to mold growth.

4. Attics

Attics in Arkansas can get extremely humid, especially in the summer. Poor insulation, roof leaks, and blocked vents can cause moisture buildup, leading to mold on rafters, insulation, and decking. Your attic may be out of sight; out of mind, but it does impact your air quality of your living spaces.

Tip: Make sure attic vents are clear and your roof is inspected regularly for leaks.

5. HVAC Systems and Ductwork

When condensation builds up in your AC system, mold can grow in ducts or near the coils. Mold in the ductwork is especially problematic because it can spread mold spores throughout the home.

Tip: Schedule regular HVAC maintenance and change filters often. If you smell a musty odor when the AC runs, get it checked immediately.

6. Around Windows and Doors

In older Arkansas homes, windows and doors may not be adequately sealed. This allows moisture to seep in during rainstorms or from outdoor humidity, creating a hidden mold hotspot around the framing and inside the wall.

Tip: Re-caulk windows and doors and check for soft spots in trim or drywall nearby.

7. Behind Drywall and Under Flooring

The biggest problem with mold? You often can’t see it. Past leaks or flooding — even small spills — can lead to mold growing inside walls or beneath flooring, where it remains hidden and harmful.

Tip: If you’ve had past water damage, musty smells, or lingering health symptoms, a K9 Mold Inspection can identify mold without tearing into walls.
