How the Exterior of Your Home Can Impact Indoor Air Quality

May 29, 2025 by Janet Blade |

What’s Outside Can Still Affect What You Breathe Inside

When most people think about indoor air quality, they imagine dust, pet dander, or mold inside the home. But what many Arkansas homeowners don’t realize is this: your home’s exterior plays a major role in what’s floating in your indoor air.

At K9 Mold Inspections LLC, we specialize in uncovering hidden mold that can compromise your indoor air — and we often trace the root of the problem to issues on the outside of the home.

Let’s look at how your roof, siding, drainage, and landscaping can directly impact the air you and your family breathe.

1. Poor Drainage & Improper Grading

When rainwater isn’t properly directed away from your home, it can seep into your foundation, crawl space, or basement. This moisture creates ideal conditions for hidden mold growth — and once mold starts growing under your home, its spores can rise into your living areas through tiny cracks or the HVAC system.

What to Watch For:

  • Pooled water near your foundation after a storm
  • Gutters that overflow or downspouts that discharge too close to the house
  • A musty smell in your crawl space or lower floors

Quick Fix: Extend downspouts, regrade the yard to slope away from the house, and install French drains or a sump pump if needed.

2. Cracked Siding & Leaky Windows

Damaged siding or poorly sealed windows allow moisture to sneak into wall cavities. Once inside, water gets trapped behind drywall or insulation where mold thrives unseen. This mold releases microscopic spores that degrade your indoor air quality, especially when your HVAC system pulls in air from these areas.

Tip: Inspect your siding and windows annually — especially after Arkansas storm seasons — and repair or reseal any gaps.

3. Overgrown Landscaping & Shaded Exterior Walls

Trees and shrubs planted too close to your home can trap moisture against exterior walls and reduce air flow. This damp environment encourages mold to grow on siding, in soffits, or around windows — and this can seep into the home over time.

Tip: Keep bushes trimmed at least 1–2 feet away from the home and clear leaves or debris that pile up around the foundation.

4. Roof Problems & Attic Ventilation

A leaky or poorly ventilated roof can let water enter the attic and increase humidity levels, leading to mold growth on rafters and insulation. Since attics share air with living spaces, mold spores can travel into your home’s air system.

A specific part of your roof that may lead to mold growth inside walls is the flashing installed under your shingles. If flashing is insufficient or missing, this can lead to considerable mold growth inside wall cavities.

Warning Signs:

  • Dark stains or streaks on your ceiling
  • A musty smell coming from vents
  • Increased allergy symptoms in the home

Tip: Check your attic after heavy rain, and ensure ridge vents, soffit vents, and attic fans are working properly.

5. Exterior Mold & Mildew Growth

You may notice green or black staining on siding, decks, or even outdoor HVAC units. While this is unsightly, it can also become a source of mold spores — especially if doors or windows nearby are frequently opened.

Tip: Regularly clean siding and decks with mold-safe solutions, and service your HVAC unit to prevent exterior mold buildup from being drawn inside. Just make sure that your home has water-resistant wrap underneath the siding. Otherwise, pressure washing your siding may become considerable moldy situation.
